Pub grub on another level

The restaurant: Canton Arms, 177 South Lambeth Road

The reason: why not…


On the menu: this is the most fantastic menu. It changes daily and the ingredients are incredibly fresh. The pub itself is low key and informal but the food is truly spectacular, making it the perfect place for a Wednesday evening bite. We both kicked off with the blood orange and prosseco fizz to start, before ordering a bottle of red.


We shared two starters, the smoked haddock with leeks and soft boiled egg and the squid with chilli mayo. Both were yummy, but the chilli mayo was outstanding and the waiter told us it was made with a mix of chilli sauces, including a Canton Arms home brew… I would like the recipe for that!


I then had the mackerel, fennel anchovy and buttered almonds, as the waiter told me the fish was ‘spankingly’ fresh. He wasn’t wrong. Apart from a few issues with bones because it came whole, it was unbelievably good. Henry had the ox tongue, which was hidden under a mound of thin and crispy chips, I had a nibble and the combination of bearnaise with soft tongue is very hard to beat. We refrained on pudding as there was some rocky road waiting for usΒ back at the house.



On the numma scale? FAB FAB FAB. What a wonderful menu, I could have eaten everything. Looking forward to going back already…
